Ranthambore National Park is situated approximately 13.5 kilometers from the city of Sawai Madhopur in the state of Rajasthan.
Positioned at the confluence of the Aravali and Vindhya hill ranges, this location is renowned for its exceptional opportunities to observe wildlife, particularly due to the animals’ familiarity with human presence. The park spans an area of approximately 400 square kilometers, and when combined with the Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary area, the total coverage extends to around 500 square kilometers.
Within Ranthambore National Park, there are various architectural remnants that evoke a sense of past eras. Numerous water bodies are scattered throughout the park, providing essential respite for the wildlife during the scorching summer days. Atop a hill, a grand fort, from which the park derives its name, dominates the landscape. Additionally, the jungle is adorned with remnants of historical periods, imparting a distinctive and captivating blend of nature, history, and wildlife. Tigers within Ranthambore National Park have even been observed hunting in full view of human visitors.
The history of Ranthambore Tiger Reserve dates back to its establishment as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955 by the Government of India. On November 1st, 1980, Ranthambore was officially declared a national park, while the adjacent forests were named the Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary and Keladevi Sanctuary.
